3 Oaks Recreation Area

Posted by sealevel in Untagged

Sea Level Diving Has Use of 3 Oaks Recreation Area For Scuba Training

3_Oaks_Rec_Area_Map_scubaBeginning May 1st Sea Level Diving will be using 3 Oaks Recreation Area to do Scuba Training in the South Lake. The South Lake is the larger of the two lakes and has small sailboats as well as fishing. The scuba area will be on the north east shore in a buoyed off area exclusively for scuba. We'll be able to enter and exit the lake from the shore via a new beach area just for scuba divers. We put in 3 training platforms at about 25 feet of depth and about 25 yards apart. The maximum depth in the lake is about 45 feet so we can do all of our training except the deep dive and a wreck dive. There is no wreck to dive on, maybe next year we can put something down there.

This is the first year diving in the lake so we don't have much information as to what the condition will be like all season but as of April 15, 2012 the water was 56 and visibility was 25 feet.

If you’re unfamiliar with the new recreation area it is the old Vulcan gravel pit on highway 14 in Crystal Lake. It was reclaimed by the city and after many improvements it opened last year to the public for fishing, picnicking, sail boating, hiking and swimming. If you're a diving professional and would like to use 3 Oaks Recreation Area for training please contact Eric Helm at the City of Crystal Lake 815-459-2020.

The city is limiting the diving to “Training Dives” for the first year to gauge how much demand there will be for diving as well as controlling the number of divers in the lake. For now they will not be allowing recreational divers to just go use the lake.

How can you dive 3 Oaks now? Sign up for any of our PADI courses or sign up for our Discover Local Diving activity. A complete list of courses we offer can be found here.  Discover Local Diving will be schedule on the weekends and by reservation on weekdays. Please visit our Discover Local Diving page for more information.

The City of Crystal Lake has set the following resident and non-resident fees for scuba diving in the lake. Fees will be collected at the entrance to the lake and are not included in our course fees or Discover Local Diving activity fee.

Resident Parking: Free
Non-resident parking: $5.00
Resident Diving: $12.00
Non-resident Diving: $15.00
